Shelby County's first county seat

Raleigh is older than it looks. Settled in 1824, it was the first county seat of Shelby County until the courts moved to Memphis in 1866. Stone from the old courthouse was later used in Bartlett. Raleigh gave up its own charter in 1912, and Memphis annexed it on January 1, 1973.

Today most of Raleigh is suburban housing from the second half of the 20th century, with Covington Pike and Austin Peay Highway as the main commercial corridors. Raleigh Springs Mall, which opened in 1971, was bought by the city in 2016 and rebuilt as the Raleigh Springs Civic Center with a library, police station and skatepark.

Rodents along the Wolf River and the corridors

The Wolf River bottoms along Raleigh's southern edge are wooded and wet, with good Norway rat habitat. Homes on streets that back up to the river corridor or to drainage ditches see more yard rats and burrows.

The housing is mostly brick ranches and split-levels with attics, garages and either slabs or crawl spaces. Mice get in at garage door corners, gaps under the brick and around utility lines. Roof rats use mature trees to reach attics.

Commercial strips on Austin Peay and Covington Pike, with restaurants and older shopping centers, support rats around dumpsters.

Split-levels and finished garages

Raleigh has many split-level and ranch homes with garages that sit partly below the main floor or connect to a den or laundry room. When mice get into the garage, the wall between the garage and the living space is often the next stop. Check the base of that wall and the door between the garage and the house for gaps. Weatherstripping and a door sweep on that interior door are cheap and help a lot.

What a Raleigh job usually looks like

Expect trapping in the garage, attic or crawl space, and sealing around the foundation, garage door and utility lines. Yards near the river may need burrow treatment and cleanup of woodpiles and brush. See rat burrow treatment.

Before you call

What to say when you call

Your call goes to an independent rodent control provider serving Raleigh. Two minutes of detail up front gets you a straighter answer on timing and price.

Tell them

  • ✓Rats or mice, if you can tell. Mouse droppings are rice-sized; rat droppings run about half an inch or longer.
  • ✓Where the activity is: attic, ceiling, walls, kitchen, crawl space, garage, yard or under the slab.
  • ✓How long it has been going on, and whether the noise or droppings are getting worse.
  • ✓The building: brick ranch, Midtown bungalow on a crawl space, townhome, apartment, restaurant or warehouse.
  • ✓Your neighborhood or ZIP code and the times that work for a visit.
  • ✓Anything already tried, like snap traps, store bait, foam in a gap or a past service.

Ask them

  • ?Is the company chartered by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (or licensed in Mississippi, for DeSoto County)?
  • ?Will the technician seal the entry points, or only set traps and bait?
  • ?How many return visits does the price cover, and what does an extra one cost?
  • ?Can I see the plan and the quote in writing before work starts?
  • ?What goes inside the house, and how is it kept away from kids and pets?
