A 1950s suburb that became part of the city

Whitehaven grew fast after World War II. Its population went from about 1,300 in 1950 to nearly 14,000 in 1960, and Memphis annexed it on January 1, 1970. It runs from around Brooks Road south to the Mississippi state line, with Elvis Presley Boulevard (the old Highway 51, first a plank road to Hernando in 1852) through the middle.

Graceland is here, along with Southland Mall, which opened in 1966 as the first enclosed mall in Memphis.

Brick ranches and their weak spots

Most Whitehaven homes are brick ranches from the 1950s and 1960s. After six or seven decades, they share a set of common openings: weep holes and gaps under the brick ledge, crawl space vents with rusted screens, worn garage and carport door seals, and old penetrations for gas lines, plumbing and cable.

Mice are the most common call. Roof rats show up too, using the mature trees planted when the subdivisions were new. They get into low attics through soffit gaps and roof vents.

Commercial strips along Elvis Presley Boulevard and around Southland Mall bring restaurant waste and dumpsters, which support Norway rats nearby.

Carports, sheds and fenced yards

Many Whitehaven homes have carports or one-car garages that were later enclosed, plus a storage shed in a fenced backyard. Enclosed carports often have gaps where the new wall meets the old slab or roof, and mice find them. Sheds with wood floors give Norway rats a place to burrow underneath. Clear clutter from the carport, check the base of enclosed garage walls for daylight, and ask the technician to look under the shed.

What to ask for

Ask for an inspection that covers the full perimeter at ground level, the attic and the garage. Sealing the foundation and the brick-to-slab gaps usually matters most. See mouse control and rodent exclusion.

Before you call

What to say when you call

Your call goes to an independent rodent control provider serving Whitehaven. Two minutes of detail up front gets you a straighter answer on timing and price.

Tell them

  • ✓Rats or mice, if you can tell. Mouse droppings are rice-sized; rat droppings run about half an inch or longer.
  • ✓Where the activity is: attic, ceiling, walls, kitchen, crawl space, garage, yard or under the slab.
  • ✓How long it has been going on, and whether the noise or droppings are getting worse.
  • ✓The building: brick ranch, Midtown bungalow on a crawl space, townhome, apartment, restaurant or warehouse.
  • ✓Your neighborhood or ZIP code and the times that work for a visit.
  • ✓Anything already tried, like snap traps, store bait, foam in a gap or a past service.

Ask them

  • ?Is the company chartered by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (or licensed in Mississippi, for DeSoto County)?
  • ?Will the technician seal the entry points, or only set traps and bait?
  • ?How many return visits does the price cover, and what does an extra one cost?
  • ?Can I see the plan and the quote in writing before work starts?
  • ?What goes inside the house, and how is it kept away from kids and pets?

FAQ

Whitehaven rodent questions

Why do mice get into my Whitehaven brick house?

Older brick homes often have gaps at weep holes, under the brick ledge, around pipes and at garage door corners. Mice need only about a quarter inch.

Do I need attic work if I only see mice in the kitchen?

Maybe not, but a full inspection should check the attic too. Mice and roof rats both use attics, and the kitchen may just be where they feed.

Can rats from businesses on Elvis Presley Boulevard reach my house?

Rats can travel a few hundred feet from food to nest. Homes near commercial strips may see more activity. Removing yard cover and sealing the house helps.
